Record numbers of tablets and smartphones are predicted to be snapped up by consumers this year.

The Deloitte Technology, Media and Telecommunications practice revealed five million tablets are set to be sold to individuals who already own such a device.

Global lead at the division Jolyon Barker said since coming on to the market in 2010, tablets do not look as though they will slow down in popularity.

Indeed, a recent YouGov study revealed that more than 640,000 tablets were presented as Christmas gifts last year, with 72 per cent of these the Apple iPad.

It is also going to be a significant year for smartphones, with at least 500 million devices costing less than £65 each expected to be in use by the end of 2012.

"The number of apps available reached one million in December 2011 and will double again by the end of 2012. However, the proportion that [is] paid for remains small," Mr Barker stated.
