The way consumers interact with brands has changed and the advent of technology is one of the reasons behind that, according to the director of operations at membership community for the e-retail industry IMRG.

David Smith said that consumers have become savvier about how they shop online and are using the web to undertake more thorough research.

Companies looking to reach out to potential customers may therefore benefit from strong e-marketing campaigns or from displaying the most up-to-date industry news on their websites.

It has also been suggested by various retail industry experts that firms which use blogs are often considered to be more cutting edge than those which do not, so organisations looking to appeal to a modern audience may wish to develop their news sites in this way.

Mr Smith indicated that more women now shop online than in previous years, while he also noted that the so-called silver surfer generation is also picking up.

"I think a lot of it is to do with how we are changing as people and being a lot more comfortable with the technology that surrounds us," he explained. "It has enabled us to shop online with confidence."
