Marketers 'should consider' older people online

Internet providers and those marketing online should become more aware of the buying potential of older people, an expert has commented.

Gordon Lishman, director general of the charity Age Concern, explained that there are not as many websites which cater to the older demographic as to other groups.

"Web providers need to switch on to the buying power and increasing internet usage of the grey pound," he urged.

Mr Lishman highlighted that around three in five people in the over-50 age range have access to a computer, adding that an increasing number use the web to stay in touch with family, pursue hobbies and interests and meet people.

Last year, the Office for National Statistics published research into internet usage between 2002 and the first three months of 2006.

It discovered that those aged between 55 and 64 showed the largest rise in online time during that period.

Furthermore, in March a poll conducted by alljoinon.com found over-60s spend an average of almost £50 a month through the internet.ADNFCR-1351-ID-18551651-ADNFCR
