Sainsbury's website and marketing approach has seen a significant increase in online sales, new figures show.

In 2007 the leading UK supermarket chain has seen sales for its online home delivery service increase by 40 per cent.

Interim figures released by the retail giant today showed the website was receiving around 80,000 customer orders each week and the portal is available to 83 per cent of UK households.

At present the number of stores offering the home delivery service stands at 137 but this is due to be boosted to 200 by March 2010 and sales are expected to double accordingly.

Sainsbury's has also anticipated the seasonal rush in online sales by increasing Christmas delivery slots by 40 per cent.

A recent study by comscore showed that European shoppers preferred to use credit cards rather than debit cards or PayPal when buying Christmas presents online.
