Online social networking is a useful way for companies to carry out branding.
This is according to Mark Batchelor, managing director of Markman OTW, who explained that brand building means "generating awareness and engagement of the market and customers with your brand" and went on to point out that this can be done with social media.
The expert noted the advantages of online marketing over traditional offline channels, such as being much cheaper and easier to quantify.
Mr Batchelor explained that this can be very beneficial to small companies.
Having a presence on social media platforms helps to generate discussion about a product or firm, which he said was necessary for brand building.
Mr Batchelor was speaking after recent research from the Chartered Institute of Marketing found that almost half of marketers are wary of taking full advantage of social media.
At the same time, a study by Econsultancy and Guava showed that 81 per cent of firms use Twitter to promote themselves.
