Charities and other organisations can use the internet to raise their profiles at a low cost, an expert has commented.
Henry Palmer, director of communications agency Society Media, asserted that the web is an important platform for businesses and charities, allowing them to achieve results whatever their budget.
Furthermore, it can help raise brand awareness of an organisation, he continued.
A successful viral campaign can often boost an organisation's online presence, Mr Palmer noted.
However, these can be hard to plan for, he explained, adding "it often appears accidental, that's the beauty of them - they appear to be accidental successes".
In particular, charities such as Friends of the Earth have successfully launched campaigns which were widely circulated, the director concluded.
Consumers are increasingly using the internet and a recent 2007 National Statistics Omnibus Survey revealed that last year six in ten UK households had web access.
Furthermore, last year 67 per cent of respondents had used the internet at least once during the three months prior to being questioned.
