Facebook engineers launch tool to make Google relevant

A handful of Facebook engineers have launched a new tool to show how Google+ posts are not necessarily the most relevant and up-to-date social media messages that can be included in search results.

In a video demonstration on the Focus on the User website, the engineers type in 'cooking' on Google, which throws up celebrity chef Jamie Oliver's Google+ profile. However, this page was last updated almost two months ago, whereas his Twitter profile is updated every day.

The Facebook team therefore argue that to include wider social media profiles, such as those from itself and Twitter, would make Google search results more relevant.

Indeed, using Google's previous search algorithm, the Jamie Oliver Google+ post does not even appear on the first page of results.

However, Google has recently redesigned its homepage so that when individuals set up a new account, they will have to create a Gmail address and will be automatically signed up to Google+.
