Despite the uncertain economic climate, 2010 is expected to see the biggest spending on online advertising, according to one expert.
Meghan Keane of Econsultancy has reviewed recent figures of ad spend and has found that this year is seeing the largest expenditure so far, with subsequent years also expected to see a rise.
Online advertising spend in the first half of this year went up 47 per cent, according to figures from the Rubicon Project.
She cites figures from comScore, which show that US internet users now see 15 per cent more display ads than in 2009.
Much of the growth is expected to come from local ads, which experts anticipate to more than double in 2011 to over $2.3 billion (£1.4 billion).
Jamie Estrin, managing director of Web TV Enterprise, recently suggested that online advertising is "exploding" thanks to the good returns investors have seen, especially in the past 12 to 18 months.
