'Cannot overstate' local search mobile marketing

It is impossible for Yahoo! to overstate the importance and impending growth of local search, according to an expert from the firm.

Frazier Miller, general manager of Yahoo! Local, said that by 2010 mobile phones are expected to outnumber PCs by three to one, adding that local information is the biggest demand from mobile users.

He continued: "We have a perfect storm brewing between user demand, advertising desire for targeting and mobile evolution that's going to make this an incredibly rich arena for the next few years."

The Yahoo! local search service has been focussing on increasing interaction with the site by enabling user reviews and recommendations as well as allowing people to subscribe to receive the opinions of their favourite local commentators, Mr Miller explained.

It is also set to increase the number of local events to make it easier to find things to do, he added.

Classical.com has announced it is to use mobile marketing to appeal to visitors at this year's Proms, Brand Republic reports.

On entering the venue, they will receive a piece of marketing via Bluetooth which will show them a short film and offer a free download of that evening's performance.
