The next 12 months will be pivotal in the evolution of mobile phone advertising, an expert has said.

Michael Bayle, senior director of global mobile for Yahoo!, was quoted by BBC News as saying mobile internet use continues to grow and 30 per cent of consumers will now browse certain websites on their handsets rather than use their PCs.

"We are seeing a lot more interest in mobile and we believe 2009 is going to be a bit of a tipping point," he remarked.

According to Mr Bayle, many people will not be interested in seeing standard adverts on their mobile phones but would like to receive engaging and relevant content.

As such, companies need to be careful to ensure their marketing campaigns fit into the latter category.

By 2020, more people will access the internet via their mobile phones than a PC, according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

Approximately 640,000 users of Orange already use their mobiles to access Facebook each month, the Telegraph reported.ADNFCR-1351-ID-18953675-ADNFCR
