The iOS operating system, which works across Apple mobile phones, iPod media players and the iPad tablet computer, reaches almost three-fifths more US users than Google's Android software.

Figures from comScore reveal a total installed user base of 37.9 million individual mobile phones, iPads and iPod Touches in the US.

By comparison, Android's user base totals 23.8 million units - including smartphones and Samsung's Galaxy Tab tablet.

Owners of multiple Apple devices account for a relatively small proportion of the total audience - about four million, or just over a tenth of iOS-enabled equipment.

In fact, among iPad owners some manufacturers of mobile phones other than Apple grab a greater market share than in the general population.

Samsung, LG and Nokia are all favoured by a higher proportion of iPad users than they are among the population at large.

The figures are part of the new comScore MobiLens service, which tracks social networking, app usage and web browsing on portable platforms.
