The next obvious step in the development of the mobile phone is a growth in the number of people receiving email via the handset, an expert suggests.

Huw Morgan, the editor of reviews site MobileChoiceUK.com, states email is a popular medium among businesses and consumers but not many people read it through their phones.

However, he predicts email, containing content such as video and photos, will increasingly be received via mobiles.

"I think the next step for messaging is not necessarily text messaging, it's more of us starting to get access to our email accounts via our phone," Mr Morgan continues.

Last month, the Mobile Marketing Association reported there is high demand among consumers for the web to be more accessible for those browsing it through their handsets.

It highlighted research by dotMobi and AKQA Mobile which revealed a high number of people in the US and the UK want more content to be available through their phones, including online banking and travel planning.ADNFCR-1351-ID-18720438-ADNFCR
