Google accounts for nearly all searches made on the mobile web, according to new data.

StatCounter figures reported by Pingdom show that the search engine represents 98.29 per cent of all mobile searches and 90.57 per cent of the overall internet search sector.

Yahoo! has 0.81 per cent of mobile searches and 3.91 per cent of web searches, while Bing accounts for 0.46 per cent and 3.74 per cent respectively.

"Google's mobile search market share dominance is almost complete. The company has made an incredible land grab in the mobile sector," Pingdom said.

The research may prompt a need for businesses to focus more on Google when it comes to mobile marketing and search engine optimisation.

In the UK, Google.co.uk represents 87.29 per cent of the search market, while Google.com accounts for 3.95 per cent, according to Experian Hitwise.

Google is also the most popular UK website in terms of overall visits, followed by Facebook, Windows Live Mail and YouTube.
