Microsoft needs to increase awareness of its mobile phone operating system (OS), according to the company's general manager of Windows Mobile Marketing.
Kevin Keith said that at present there are many people who do not know there is a version of Windows that works on a mobile phone, reports the Guardian.
His comments came as the software giant unveiled its new Windows Mobile 6.5 OS, which is due to be launched worldwide before the end of the year.
It was suggested that there will be an extensive marketing campaign, consisting of press and poster advertising across a number of markets and TV spots in Germany, France, the UK and US.
"Our main goal with the launch is to make people aware Windows Phone [systems] exist," Mr Keith explained.
The new Windows product has been developed to help Microsoft compete with Apple's iPhone and Google's Android.
Microsoft's Bing search engine will be the default setting for the product, while a program called Windows Marketplace will give users the opportunity to download software and applications on their handsets in a similar way that people use iPhone's App Store.
