Following the increase in the number of consumers using smartphones, more companies are considering mobile marketing; one expert has commented that the technology marries well with advertising.
Gorden Borrell, chief executive officer of Borrell Associates, has remarked that mobile phones are suited to advertising and marketing.
Although the market for mobile advertising is still in its early days, spend this year is expected to increase to $586 million (£379 million), which is almost double the $285 million reached last year.
"Mobile devices afford an array of features that work well with advertising and marketing - things like video, GPS [Global Positioning System], barcode scanners, maps, cameras, et cetera," comments Mr Borrell.
Last week, the firm predicted that ad spend would reach $1.8 billion by 2015.
Mr Borrell suggested that companies will see the most success by using a combination of the various mobile technologies: GPS, Cell-ID and Wi-Fi.
