Businesses looking to save money when it comes to online marketing might want to try their hand at mobile advertising, it has been suggested.

Speaking at the recent Technology for Marketing & Advertising event, Pinder Takhar of Dialogue Communications indicated that mobile marketing methods such as text messaging could cut advertising costs for companies during the downturn.

She gave the example of a retail firm using text messages to send offers to consumers instead of advertising on the internet, and advised companies to create a mobile website and use messaging to promote it.

Ms Takhar went on to comment: "Everyone has their mobile with them at all times now and if they see an offer they like [via mobile messaging] it is more likely to drive traffic into the store."

According to browser maker Opera, use of the mobile web grew by 63.4 per cent in the UK during January compared with December, with the equivalent growth figure for the US standing at 73 per cent.
