This year could be a significant period of growth for the mobile marketing sector, according to one research firm.

Speaking to the New York Times, Windsor Holden, principal analyst at Juniper Research, said that spending on mobile marketing is expected to reach $6 billion (£3.8 billion) by 2014, compared with the $1.4 billion spent on the medium in 2009.

He said that analysts had been predicting for the last five years that the following year could be a big one for mobile advertising.

"There are a number of pointers to the possibility that this will be the year when we get some significant traction," Mr Holden remarked.

Last week, Opera's latest State of the Mobile Web report revealed that the UK is the tenth biggest user of the company's Opera Mini browser for mobile phones.

It also showed that Facebook overtook VKontakte to become the most visited social networking website among mobile web users last year.
