Research firm to measure mobile web usage

Internet research organisation comScore has announced that this year it will begin measuring internet usage on mobile phones.

Magid Abraham, president and chief executive officer of the firm, made the revelation following the release of the company's fourth quarter results, which showed record revenues of $25.3 million (£13 million).

He said: "We hope to deepen penetration into our existing customer base by providing enhanced value to our customers through our expanded and innovative product offerings."

Recently, comScore employee Gian Fulgoni wrote in the company blog that the internet is an industry which is "critically dependent" on credible research.

He said investors and other interested people require information on subjects such as the effectiveness of online advertising, the number of visitors to different sites and audience demographics.

Without such research, many more products and sites would fail and the consumer would ultimately pay for the increase in marketing costs that would ensue, Mr Fulgoni added.
