An English version of Google News for Singaporean web users has been launched.

Google News Singapore aggregates a mixture of local and international news articles from a wide variety of web-based sources.

In a post on the Google News blog, software engineer Rohit Ananthakrishna and product manager Andrew McGlinchey noted that the number of Asian editions of the service has nearly doubled in the last 12 months.

There were nine Asian versions of Google News at the start of 2008, with recent additions including those for Malaysia, the Philippines and Pakistan.

"We hope that our readers in Singapore can now reach the best news destinations on the internet even faster and that news publishers in Singapore can connect to news readers even better," Mr Ananthakrishna and Mr McGlinchey said.

Last year, Robin Goad of Hitwise posted figures showing that Google News was the most visited aggregator of online news in the UK, followed by NewsNow and social bookmarking service StumbleUpon.ADNFCR-1351-ID-18983578-ADNFCR
