Google News has announced that it is open sourcing the code for its Living Stories project to allow more online news publishers to make use of the platform.
Launched two months ago, Living Stories offers a new way for users to browse web news articles by detailing different developments in a story as they occur on a single page.
It has been used by the New York Times and the Washington Post to date, and can now be harnessed by other publications.
In a post on the Google News blog, software engineer Neha Singh and senior business product manager Josh Cohen explain that three-quarters of consumers have told the search engine they prefer the Living Stories format to standard news articles.
"Users also spent a significant amount of time exploring stories. This tells us there's a strong appetite for great journalism displayed in a compelling way," they say.
Figures from Hitwise suggest that celebrity-related queries are the most popular on Google News, followed by those linked to sport, film and TV, music, and business and finance.
