Google News has announced a number of changes to its homepage that will offer users a more personalised experience than before.

The new features include a headline stream called News For You, which provides links to news articles automatically chosen to match the reader's interests based on editable customisation settings.

Users can also choose to see more or fewer articles from specific online news portals, as well as browse the biggest topics of the day in the Top News section on the left-hand side of the homepage.

The changes have been initially rolled out for the US version of the news aggregator and will be deployed for other editions of Google News over the next few months.

"There's an old saying that all news is local. But all news is personal too - we connect with it in different ways depending on our interests, where we live, what we do and a lot of other factors," comments Kevin Stolt, software engineer at Google News, in a blog post.

Earlier this year, Google News introduced a feature that allows users to highlight and save certain stories to receive future updates on those particular topics by clicking on a star next to each headline.
