News aggregators such as Google News are becoming essential to web users keen to find ways of filtering the vast swathes of new content that is published online every day.
This is according to Techmeme founder Gabe Rivera, who told the New York Times that news aggregators are ideal in "industries where ideas can change people's view of things and there's money on the line".
He noted that news aggregators are useful for those who do not have the time to check many different blogs every day.
Techmeme is an aggregator that uses a combination of software, tips from readers and editors to spot the best stories and present them to its users.
While Google News is primarily based on an automated algorithm, it recently took steps towards providing a more personalised experience through the launch of a customised headline news feed and options to allow users to tweak the content they see.
Getting a news feed into Google News requires the use of specific search engine optimisation tactics, such as including publication dates and ensuring URLs are both unique and permanent.
