Web marketers should be aware that internet users do not always enter or exit an online resource in an orderly fashion, it has been asserted.

Sector commentator Mel Carson makes his comments on Microsoft's adCenter web resource, explaining that it is a "common misconception" among many website owners that consumers visit a site's homepage before navigating to other areas of the resource.

He notes that there are a number of means by which people will navigate to a site, including bookmarks, emailed links and organic search results, where pages are indexed by search engines and match a search query.

"If a particular page is proving a popular entry point then you should dig a little deeper to find out why," he concludes, noting that an awareness of website user activity can be useful in the development of a strategy to optimise content.

Meanwhile, sector commentator Chris Smith recently told online resource Search Engine Land that improving homepage title tags is an effective search engine optimisation strategy.
