Web content is the primary news source for 28 per cent of women over 50, according to a recent survey.
The study, carried out by VibrantNation.com, found that the female baby boomer demographic - which it described as a "powerful, advertiser-friendly block of consumers" - is tapped into new technology. In addition to
online news, two per cent of women of this generation are seeking out information via mobile devices such as the
iPhone or BlackBerry.
According to the group's founder and chief executive officer Stephen Reily, the new findings highlight the "value" of this age group as a potential marketing target.
"They are not only an audience to be reckoned with, but may well be the group of consumers who can bridge the generation gap for media companies and marketers," he said.
Of those who use the internet as their main source of news, a total of 25 per cent seek out
blogs or speciality sources and 29 per cent depend on their web service homepage for the latest information.
Earlier this week, Search Engine Land editor Danny Sullivan told OJR
blogger Robert Niles that sites offering news content should make effective use of
keywords and suggested that Google's AdWords tool may be a good resource for people who are not sure where to start.
