Some 21 per cent of those who read newspapers and magazines on the web would be willing to make small, individual payments for the news articles they wish to read.

That is according to a study by the Continental Research agency, which also found that 11 per cent of respondents would pay a larger amount to access news stories from a full publication.

Some 500 readers of news sites were questioned in the survey and only five per cent said they would be willing to pay a monthly or annual subscription for their online news.

A total of 63 per cent indicated that they would not pay at all to access website news from their favourite sources.

James Myring, head of media at Continental Research, said that the micropayment model could work.

"It is better to get a lot of people making small one-off payments, than virtually no-one paying a higher subscription," he explained.

News Corporation boss Rupert Murdoch recently announced that his company's plans to charge readers for usage of its newspapers' websites may be delayed until the second half of next year.
