New research has revealed that the proportion of US consumers turning to the internet as a main source of national and global news has risen considerably in the last year.
Four in ten consumers read this type of news online, up from 24 per cent in September last year, according to the survey conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.
More people now rely on the web for news than on newspapers, although television news was found to still be the most popular medium.
Younger people in particular were found to be likely to depend on online news than on other platforms, while the economy was the main point of interest among news readers this year.
About 40 per cent of UK consumers have high levels of trust in online news, according to a recent study by TNS.
A similar proportion of global consumers said the same about the medium in the survey.
