New research has revealed that traffic to UK newspaper sites is high in both the UK and overseas.
The figures from comScore showed that 15.9 million Britons went to an online news site run by a newspaper in March, representing 43 per cent of the UK's online population.
Among the most popular online news sites were those belonging to the Sun, the Guardian, the Telegraph and the Daily Mail, with most of the top ten seeing double-digit year-on-year growth.
The Metro was the fastest growing newspaper site overall, with its traffic up by 75 per cent between March 2008 and 2009.
International traffic to UK online news sites was also found to be high, with the Daily Mail seeing 73 per cent of its total traffic coming from non-UK markets and 67 per cent of the Financial Times's online audience originating outside of the UK.
"The online medium has enabled UK newspapers to attract substantial incremental readership from other countries - audiences that were not nearly as accessible in the days of print-only publications," said Mike Read, senior vice-president and managing director for comScore Europe.
Online news sites are also among the most popular destinations for European mobile web users, a separate report released earlier this year by comScore revealed.
