UK consumers are the most likely to read online news in western Europe, according to a new report.

Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) figures show that almost four in ten people in the country access news articles online, compared with 22 per cent of French citizens and 21 per cent in Germany, the Asia News Network reports.

South Korea came out on top for online news consumption globally with a rate of 77 per cent.

Other countries where online news penetration was found to be particularly high included Norway, Iceland and Mexico.

"The internet is rapidly replacing the conventional news media. In Korea, it has long overpowered all other forms of communication, especially the offline newspaper," the OECD's communication committee said in the report.

In the UK, several newspapers are set to launch paid-for versions of their online news offerings in order to generate extra revenue.

The Times recently unveiled the design of its forthcoming paid site for both the weekday and Sunday versions of the newspaper.
