Facebook on top for news sharing

Facebook is the most popular method utilised by web users to share links with their friends.
This is according to new figures from Gigya reported by TechCrunch, which show that 44 per cent of the almost one million items shared using Gigya's website tool in the last 30 days were distributed via Facebook.
Other popular news sharing methods were found to include Twitter, Yahoo! and MySpace, which represented 29, 18 and nine per cent of all shared items respectively.
The findings could have an impact on online marketing and, possibly, search engine optimisation strategies.
According to recent figures from Compete, Facebook accounted for 11.6 per cent of all time spent online in January, compared with Yahoo!'s share of 4.25 per cent and Google's 4.1 per cent.
"For many sites on the web, social traffic coming through Facebook, Twitter and MySpace is beginning to rival, and in some cases overtake, search traffic," remarked Erick Schonfeld of TechCrunch.
