Consumers want greater control over the media they consume and Yahoo! is adopting its news sharing approach to facilitate this, according to reports.

Jeff Weiner, Yahoo! network division executive vice-president, said a number of interesting trends were shaping online service provision.

He told the FT: "People want to control the media - they want to publish their own media."

As such, the search engine has started to implement a new window at the top of its home page, which will allow users to collect news from other sources.

This strategy will be rolled out to see the window collate thousands of different news articles and sources where users harness targeted internet search that provides content tailored specifically to their needs.

Mr Weiner added: "The web is increasingly becoming more social. And the web is becoming more open. You're seeing a platform approach."

Yahoo! is expected to continue to focus on the development of new tools, which allow people to organise and select both professionally produced and user-generated information from the web
