The majority of British web users are reluctant to pay for internet content such as online news, according to a new survey.
KPMG's Consumers & Convergence report shows that more than eight in ten UK consumers would find another source of free content if their usual website started to impose charges for access.
This is compared with 57 per cent of global consumers stating the same thing.
"UK consumers still haven't come around to the idea of paying for digital content and are clear that they will move to other sites if paywalls are put up," said Tudor Aw, head of technology at KPMG Europe LLP.
The study comes after the Times and the Sunday Times started charging users for access to all online news content published by the two newspapers.
Figures from Experian Hitwise indicate that the Times has lost two-thirds of its website traffic since the full paywall was erected at the start of July.
