Interactive advertising is on the increase thanks to social networking and the failure of banner advertisements, it has been revealed.

According to the Times, mini games - applications - on Facebook are the next medium to be exploited by promoters in a bid to increase awareness of their products.

For example, the newspaper reported, Disney has commissioned a promotional application for new film Wall-E, and Warner Brothers have released a game enabling users to give their photos a batman-style hue to promote The Dark Knight.

A report by Forrester, quoted in the newspaper, found that total spend on interactive marketing is set to increase from $18 billion (£9.1 billion) to $61 billion by 2012.

The Times reported click-through rates on advertisements that are part of a game are around 20 times higher than the 0.05 success rate of traditional banner advertisements at one per cent.

Marketing technology firm Brulant has recently claimed online retailers are missing out on business by not having their own Facebook fan pages.
