New research has revealed that many of the largest brands in the world now have their own fan pages on social networking site Facebook.

Search engine marketing firm Tamar looked at the top 100 Interbrand companies' presence on Facebook and found that 90 per cent now have pages on the site where users can become official fans of the brand.

Some of the most popular brand pages include those belonging to Coca-Cola, Nutella and Kinder Surprise, Tamar said.

Overall, US president Barack Obama, Homer Simpson and Michael Phelps were found to have the highest number of fans, followed by Coca-Cola and Nutella, with Kinder Surprise placing tenth.

Henry Elliss, head of social media at Tamar, said companies should consider harnessing Facebook in their internet marketing campaigns as a way of creating brand ambassadors in a cost-effective way.

"However, the best fan pages need investment to ensure that the page has interesting, relevant content which is updated on a regular basis," he added.

Facebook was the fourth most popular website in the UK during December 2008, according to comScore.ADNFCR-1351-ID-19002580-ADNFCR
