Oxfam and Global Call to Action Against Poverty are to work together on social media marketing to help their campaigns.

The two organisations have enlisted the work of Web 2.0 agency NixonMcInnes in order to create a widget which will connect activists from around the world, Brand Republic reports.

It suggests that this is part of a wider move by non-governmental organisations to use social media to enable them to connect with new supporters and spread information on campaigns.

Will McInnes, managing director of NixonMcInnes, suggested that the two organisations have created a "smart" digital marketing strategy.

Furthermore, they have "laid down the gauntlet to the majority of so-called fast-moving business brands who are still using the same tired and increasingly ineffective advertising-based marketing formulae," he asserted.

Earlier this year, analysis published by promotions consultancy Oneupweb asserted that brands which had made use of social media marketing had avoided the sales slump which enveloped some sectors.

Lisa Wehr, chief executive officer of the firm, recommended the medium for organisations seeking to boost sales within the "rocky 2008 economy".ADNFCR-1351-ID-18594830-ADNFCR
