Facebook has overtaken Google to become a major referrer of traffic to other web portals, a new study has indicated.

Research from Compete suggests that Facebook accounted for 13 per cent of all traffic sent to portals such as AOL, MSN and Yahoo! in December, followed by eBay with 7.61 per cent, Google at seven per cent and MySpace with less than two per cent.

Speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle, director of online media and search at Compete Jessica Ong said that the findings have implications for companies' online marketing and social media strategies.

Jeremiah Owyang of the Altimeter Group added: "Marketers must focus on social marketing in addition to traditional search, as customers have a multi-pronged way of finding information."

The research came shortly after Marshall Kirkpatrick of ReadWriteWeb claimed that Facebook could soon become a force to be reckoned with in the news feed reader market, as it offers more scope for social communication and is more widely used than the likes of Google Reader.
