Facebook has revealed that it now has 500 million users worldwide.
In a blog post, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said the figure marks "an important milestone" for the social networking site and announced the launch of the Facebook Stories app to celebrate the occasion.
The app lets users submit stories about how Facebook has affected their lives.
Other statistics released by the social media site show that half of its members log in on any given day and that the average user has 130 friends.
Furthermore, each user is connected to around 60 pages, groups and events, while over one million websites have so far integrated with the Facebook platform.
The site has 100 million mobile users and these people are twice as active on the social network as those who do not access Facebook's mobile portal.
Facebook hit the 400 million user mark in February this year and the 100 million milestone in August 2008.
