It would be a good move for its users if Facebook was able to share MySpace's content with members.

That is the view of chief operating officer at Facebook Sheryl Sandberg, who has told the Telegraph that her social networking site is open to working with its competitor.

According to the newspaper, the two companies are in talks over a potential deal that would see some of MySpace's content placed on Facebook's Connect platform, allowing users to access the material using their ID for the latter site.

"Facebook is focusing on building the best technology which helps people share content, while at MySpace they are focusing on a more content-led strategy," explained Ms Sandberg.

She also suggested that Owen Van Natta, a former Facebook employee who is now chief executive of MySpace, maintains a close relationship with his former employer.

Earlier this week, digital analyst comScore revealed that social networking sites accounted for 13.8 billion display ad impressions in August, which represented more than a quarter of all display ads viewed online during the month.
