Firms developing online marketing campaigns will soon have a new way of measuring the success of their ads on social networking website Facebook, it has emerged.

According to the Wall Street Journal, chief operating officer at the social media portal Sheryl Sandberg will tell an advertising conference in New York today that the site is partnering with research group Nielsen.

The two companies will develop Nielsen Brand Lift, which will see Facebook poll its users on their use of display ads and Nielsen package the information for marketers.

Last week, the networking site's chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the portal had started making profit ahead of schedule, with advertising one of the main sources of income.

Meanwhile, Nielsen Online announced today that employees are spending an increasing amount of time on social networking sites during the working day.

It claimed that the number of users of portals like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace grew more than seven-fold between 2007 and 2008.
