Facebook takes greater share of internet market

Social networking website Facebook had a 5.1 per cent share of overall global internet usage in September, according to digital analyst comScore's World Metrix.

This equated to a 2.9 per cent increase year-on-year and positioned the site fourth in the list of most popular online companies.

The rise in the amount of time people are spending on the portal would suggest that the social media site is an ideal platform for online marketing due to the large potential audience base.

Indeed, back in September, Nielsen Online revealed that amount of time employees in the UK spent on sites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace during the working day grew more than seven-fold between 2007 and 2008.

Meanwhile, comScore's latest research indicated that sites from Microsoft, Google and Yahoo! secured the highest proportion of total minutes spent online in September.

Almost 27 billion hours were spent on the web globally in September by an online population of 1.2 billion, the firm added.
