Foursquare to reach 4 million users this week?

Location-based platform Foursquare is set to have four million users by the end of this week, according to an industry expert.

Jennifer Van Grove of Mashable has revealed that a source close to Foursquare disclosed the information directly to the company, which comes following reports that this figure has already been hit.

Announcing that the company reached four million users last week, About Foursquare based their figures on the number of user Ids reached. Ms Van Grove says that this number is close, but that the four millionth user will actually sign up this week.

Mashable estimates that Foursquare is now receiving approximately 20,000 new users each day, after hitting the three million mark just 50 days ago.

Attributing this rapid growth to a number of reasons, Ms Van Grove suggests the main influencing factors could be releases for the iPhone and Android, as well as "celebrity attention".

Facebook recently released its own location-based service, which became available in the UK in September, one month after its release in the US.
