Businesses have been offered tips on how best to manage their social media campaigns in 2010.

According to a BNET column by Yann Gourvennec of Orange Business Services, 2010 is set to be the year of social media - and organisations that use it should see the medium become a vital part of their online campaigns.

As such, it is important that companies know how best to manage their operations on social networking websites, the expert explained.

He advised creating and sticking to a code of conduct for interacting with consumers on social media sites and embracing user-generated content - particularly online video.

When it comes to measuring the success of social media campaigns, marketers would do well to look at monetary savings as well as tracking web visits and other metrics, Mr Gourvennec said.

"Social media return on investment forecasts will need to be created to demonstrate a proven benefit," he added.

Facebook is the most popular social networking website in most European nations, according to comScore.
