New figures have shown that social networking is the fast-growing category of mobile-based web use in the US.
The statistics from comScore - which could be useful to those deploying mobile marketing campaigns - show 14.5 million users accessed a social networking app in April, up 240 per cent on the same month last year.
Online news apps were the second fastest-growing type of mobile app content, followed by those dealing with sports information.
Despite this growth, however, browser-based mobile web usage continued to be more popular overall than mobile apps.
Almost 73 million Americans used the mobile internet in this way during April, up 31 per cent year-on-year.
Social networking again saw the highest growth for this type of mobile web usage.
Mark Donovan, comScore senior vice-president of mobile, commented: "Social networking is by far the fastest-growing mobile activity right now ... We expect to see both application and browser usage continuing to drive future consumption of social media."
Earlier this year, the research firm released figures indicating that mobile access to Facebook and Twitter in particular has soared in the last 12 months.
