Mobile social networking 'set to boom'

A new report has predicted that usage of mobile social networking services will soar over the next five years.
The study by eMarketer indicates that the number of people using such websites will surge from 141.4 million this year to 760.1 million worldwide in 2014, representing 45 per cent of all mobile web users.
Despite this, it is likely
online marketing professionals will still find it a challenge to take advantage of the rise of mobile social networking in the next few years, report author Noah Elkin said.
"As impressive as these numbers are, gaining a voice in the conversations taking place across mobile social networks will prove challenging for marketers," he remarked.
This is because the leading social networks -
Facebook and
MySpace - use ad-free mobile apps, although smaller sites are offering advertisers the chance to place display ads on their networks.
A recent comScore study indicated that social networks registered 13.8 billion display ad impressions in August, equivalent to more than 25 per cent of all such ads viewed online.
