Social networking website MySpace accounted for more US display ads viewed online than any of its competitors in the social media market during June 2009, new research has revealed.

Digital analyst comScore used data from its Ad Metrix service to find that MySpace and Facebook were the dominant social networks in this area, delivering 80 per cent of ads in this category between them.

Overall, social media websites accounted for more than 20 per cent of display ads viewed via the internet.

Jeff Hackett, comScore senior vice-president, said that social networking has become one of the main reasons consumers head online and these portals now account for a significant percentage of the online marketing people see on the web.

"Because the top social media sites can deliver high reach and frequency against target segments at a low cost, it appears that some advertisers are eager to use social networking sites as a new advertising delivery vehicle," he explained.

Last month, comScore revealed that the number of 15 to 24-year-olds visiting social networking sites in the UK reached 6.8 million in June - a 14 per cent hike year-on-year.
