Some 57 per cent of companies in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide have a presence on social networking website Facebook, it has been revealed.
The e-marketing research also found that almost three-quarters of the firms use at least one of the major social networks or social shopping sites to help get their message across.
eMarketer, which conducted the study, claimed that Facebook has become popular with marketers because it has implemented interactive features that provide brands with the opportunity to communicate with fans.
Jeffrey Grau, eMarketer e-commerce senior analyst and author of the report Social Commerce on Facebook, Twitter and Retail Sites, said: "Retailers need to place their virtual storefronts where their customers congregate."
He added that this shows the nature of e-commerce is moving from "a transactional experience to a social one".
Many of the companies that sell goods online have created blogs to help raise their brand's profile further. Indeed, it has been suggested by a number of e-marketing experts that blogging proves that a business is cutting edge.
