UK web users made more visits to social media sites than to search engines last month - the first time this has happened, according to new statistics.

The data from Experian Hitwise indicates that social networking websites represented 11.88 per cent of all UK web traffic in May, compared with 11.33 per cent for search engines.

Facebook accounted for 55 per cent of all visits to social media sites - although Robin Goad of Experian Hitwise pointed out that the social network has yet to dominate its market to the same extent as Google has taken over the search sector.

"Together, google.co.uk and google.com accounted for nine in every ten web searches carried out in the UK during May," he remarked.

"Consequently, Google UK was the most visited website in the UK."

According to recent figures from Ofcom, nearly three-quarters of UK adults used the internet at home or elsewhere in 2009, with Scots being the most likely to have a social networking profile.
