Some 86 per cent of UK companies plan to spend more money on social media in 2010 and many consider it an ideal e-marketing tool, new research suggests.

According to a study by Econsultancy and digital marketing agency bigmouthmedia, a further 13 per cent of businesses are set to keep the same budget for social media ventures in 2010 as they did this year.

The research claims to be the most comprehensive study of its kind on how firms are utlilising social networking sites like Facebook and microblogging platforms such as Twitter for online marketing and PR purposes.

A total of 54 per cent of firms say that the biggest obstacle to better social media engagement is a lack of resources.

Phil Gripton, managing director of bigmouthmedia UK, states: "While an increasing number of companies are embracing social media, many are struggling to effectively manage their engagement and are consequently failing to make the most of a potentially enormous opportunity."

Last month, Econsultancy launched a new one-day training workshop entitled Online PR and Social Media for Healthcare Professionals, aiming to offer information on how businesses in this sector can utilise such methods successfully.
