Web users spend 22 per cent of all online time on social networking websites, according to new figures.

Statistics from Nielsen Online show that 110 billion minutes are now spent on social media sites by web users around the world, with three-quarters of the online population visiting such websites.

Three of the most popular online brands in the world are social media-related - Facebook, YouTube and Wikipedia.

Facebook has more than 400 million active users around the world.

Nielsen Online also notes that Brazilian web users are the most likely to use social media sites, followed by those in Italy, Spain and Japan.

"The popularity of social media is undeniable," Nielsen Online says in a blog post.

A survey conducted by the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization earlier this year found that spending on social media campaigns looks set to rise, offering a significant opportunity for those involved with search marketing.
