Twitter is evolving as an online marketing tool at an exponential rate, according to one expert.

Jim Monks, chief operating officer at TweetMeme, said at Internet World that one area which is driving this uptake is his site's news filtering feature, which involves taking news stories and filtering them to various different subjects.

He added that these stories are ranked by how often they are repeated by retweets, meaning that irrelevant content is filtered out, leaving users to read information which is relevant and interesting.

"Twitter's still growing like crazy; we're growing about ten per cent a month, so we know how fast Twitter is growing," Mr Monks told delegates.

According to research published by Econsultancy and digital agency Guava, 81 per cent of businesses use Twitter as an online marketing tool, making it more popular than Facebook with advertising executives.

The study revealed that the proportion of companies who say they use Twitter in some form or another has increased by almost half in the last 12 months.
