The UK has the highest number of people using social networking sites of all countries in Europe, a new report has revealed.

A study conducted by Datamonitor has shown that UK use of such sites is "booming".

Furthermore, the research firm predicts that the number of social networkers will continue to rise, forecasting there will be 27 million members by 2012.

It asserted that part of the reason for the success of websites such as Facebook and MySpace is that they encourage user-generated content.

"While the trend is driven by the younger age groups, many older generations are also being drawn to social media," Datamonitor added.

A recent study by Forrester Research predicted that the number of businesses using social networks and other Web 2.0 features is likely to rise.

It suggested that technological developments are allowing businesses to communicate with their clients and staff in a "fundamentally new way".

Forrester Research suggested that business spending on the medium will reach $4.6 billion (£2.3 billion) by 2013.ADNFCR-1351-ID-18578063-ADNFCR
